THE EARTH, MY BUTT, AND OTHER BIG, ROUND THINGS by Carolyn Mackler

Virginia Shreves, a High School Sophomore, lives according to the Unspoken Rules for Fat Girls.  She hides in baggy clothing; when she kisses Froggy Welsch the Fourth she makes sure it’s private so he’ll never be publicly shamed; and she bounces from diet to diet, led by her exacting, perfectionist mother.

With her brother a Big Man on the Colombia campus and her sister away with the Peace Corps, Virginia feels like the odd one out in her thin, beautiful and talented family.  But when a disaster upsets the entire family structure, Virginia must find her own intelligence, talents, and strength.
