In Kyra’s world, a man chooses a woman to be his wife. Then he chooses another. And another. And another, if he feels like it.
Kyra lives in a polygamist community. Her father has three wives. Kyra has 20 brothers and sisters, with two more on the way.
The prophet rules every little detail of their lives. When he has a “revelation”, it becomes law for the whole community — for example, he orders that men must have three wives and that babies born disabled must be killed immediately.
So when the prophet orders that 13-year-old Kyra become the seventh wife of her 60-year-old uncle, Kyra knows that she must either resign herself to this fate or leave the only world she’s ever known.
