Esperanza Ortega leads a charmed life in Aguascalientes, Mexico.  The daughter of a wealthy ranch owner, Esperanza has everything she could ever want: servants, horses, beautiful clothes and delicious food.

Then bandits attack and take away Esperanza’s father, wealth, and security in one fell swoop.

Forced to flee with her mother to a labor camp in California, Esperanza battles illness, poverty, inadequate shelter, and her own ineptitude for hard labor.  Through it all, she must learn to rise above her fear, pain, and pride.
